What do I need to know when setting up a home workshop?

If you’re a typical Kiwi handyman working on all sorts of things, two main problems come up — and they oppose each other.
On one side, you’ve got fabrication work like grinding, welding, and painting. It makes a mess, so you need an area that’s easy to clean or doesn’t matter if it gets dusty.
On the other side, you’ve got engine work and mechanical jobs that need to stay clean.
One way to solve this is to separate the space. You can add a lean-to for the messy work and keep the cleaner work inside, or use a partition wall to divide the shed into separate areas.

Do I need to spend a lot of money on a large shed for a home workshop?

No. You can achieve a lot with the right setup, even in a smaller space.
Tip 1: Use workbenches that can be moved around. This lets you change the layout depending on the job you’re doing.
Tip 2: Line the walls with plywood so you can hang tools and free up space. Use shelving that goes up toward the roof to create more storage without taking up floor area.
Tip 3: Install plenty of power points. Extension cords are messy, take up space, and waste time.
