Double garages for residential and lifestyle use

Q: Can I build a double garage myself?

Yes, a double garage can be a straightforward build with the right planning and design. Even with limited experience, a simple and well-prepared kitset garage is not a large or overly complex project.

Q: What should I look for when comparing double garages?

It is important to check what is included in the price and compare like for like. Consider the materials used, how the roof underlay is supported, the type of bracing, cladding quality and flashings supplied. Choosing based on price alone can lead to compromises in strength and durability.

Double Garages NZ – Single, Double and 3 Bay Options

Double garages are a great choice for residential property owners, providing space for two vehicles along with room for everyday items. For those who need a bit more room, a 3 bay garage offers more floor space for storage or whatever purpose you have in mind.

3 bay garages are a common size for lifestyle and rural use, providing more flexibility than a double garage. In many cases, once you start using the space, even a 3 bay can feel tight, and a 4 bay becomes the better long-term option.

Flexible Design Options

Custom sizes to suit your site and intended use
Single or multiple doors and access points
Roller doors, PA doors, windows and other options
Open, enclosed or partially enclosed areas
Storage, workshop, vehicle or mixed-use layouts
Custom internal layouts and building configurations
Roof and wall options to suit the building design
Site and location-specific engineering

Door Layout and Cost

A typical 2 bay double garage provides space for two vehicles. The most cost-effective option is access through the side wall (under the gutter) with two roller doors, one per bay.

If you want access through the gable end wall, you have two options: two separate doors, one on either side of the apex, or a single wide door. A wide opening in the end wall is generally more costly option, as more strength needs to be built into the end portal frame to allow for the wider opening.

Gable or Mono-Pitch Garage Design

We can deliver a double garage in either a gable or mono-pitch design. The choice usually comes down to the overall look you want to achieve and personal preference.

Gable roof double garages are the more common option. They suit most residential properties and provide a balanced, traditional look with open spans and good internal space.

Mono-pitch garages have a single sloping roof and can be an attractive option when other buildings on the property also have flat roofs, helping everything tie together visually. They are ideal when the building needs to sit alongside another structure or near a boundary where shading needs to be kept to a minimum.

Photos and Details of our system

The average shed company designs buildings based on standard measurements simply rounded to the meter, then builders trim the excess cladding to suit. We do it way better – we base each dimension on the total cover of the cladding sheets

Why?

A wall 12.3 m wide instead of 12.0 m really makes a difference. Everything lines up, flashings fit properly, reducing waste and saving time.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Paul Wiiliams always had a smiling face with great work ethic. Our 10 year old shed has doubled in value. We now live in the legal cottage attached to the garaging. But previously it was rented out. Best thing we ever did.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I built a kitset shed in 2025 (4 bays, 16.25m x 8.9m) and it was a total blast! The kit instructions were excellent, and anything I didn't fully understand I was able to phone Paul and get the answer quickly. The shed is now complete and being set up as an engineering workshop. I can't wait to get some projects going. I highly recommend Kitset Sheds Ltd and owner Paul Williams (no relation to me) for their helpfulness, excellent communication, speedy delivery, excellent product and overall ease to deal with.
